Describe the work before looking for a name

Begin with a short account of what happened, who is involved, and what must happen next. Mention any hearing, notice, threatened action, or document awaiting signature at the start. Someone who regularly handles your type of matter can explain which records deserve immediate attention. Familiarity with Karnal proceedings may help with practical arrangements, but location alone does not establish suitability for every case.

Ask about professional identity and relevant experience

Request the advocate’s full name, enrolment details, and usual areas of practice. Where verification is needed, approach the relevant State Bar Council through its official channels; the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana is a relevant starting point for advocates enrolled there. Local bar association membership and professional enrolment serve different purposes. Avoid treating an online ranking, photograph, or shared surname as a credential check.

Understand the fee and the scope

Ask what the quoted amount covers: advice, drafting, filing, particular appearances, or a defined stage of proceedings. Discuss court fees, copying, travel, and other expenses separately. Record when payments fall due and how receipts will be issued. A clear engagement should also identify work that needs a fresh agreement, such as an appeal or enforcement after a decision.

Bring a usable file, not an unexplained bundle

Arrange notices, agreements, receipts, orders, and correspondence by date. Keep originals safe and supply legible copies unless the advocate asks for originals for a particular purpose. Include material that seems unhelpful to your position: an earlier admission or payment can change the analysis. Tell the advocate which papers are missing rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.

Leave with responsibilities you can explain

Before ending the meeting, confirm who will do the next task, how you will receive updates, and when you should follow up. Ask what outcome is realistically being pursued and what facts remain uncertain. Be cautious about guaranteed success. If cost is a barrier, ask the District Legal Services Authority about eligibility for assistance before assuming that representation is unavailable.

Make a useful file

Your document checklist

  • A one-page timeline with the most urgent date highlighted.
  • Names and roles of every party, including previous lawyers.
  • A written fee and scope note, with payment records.
  • A list of documents to provide and the next follow-up date.
